What is cupping? It’s an ancient art uses for 1,000’s of years in Egypt, Middle East, and in China practices of TCM, Oriental medicine, and in the 1950’s in hospitals. It is looked at as a deep healing modality. In fact, it was used widely to treat disease and illness, especially the flu with cough, and all respiratory aliments, and as a type of auxiliary method for surgery in China.
How does it work? The suction draws a small amount of skin and superficial muscle into the cup. Similar to massage that applies pressure to the muscles; it uses controlled pressure to pull upward. It is long believed this helps open up meridians that have blocks or that are stagnate, removes toxins deep within the tissues, and opens up blood and lymph flow to the area that promotes deep healing, increases oxygen to the area, and pushes out stagnate lactic acids from the area. Similar to a Swedish massage, this technique helps relieve pain and sore muscles, built up tension and stress muscles hold onto, breaks up deep adhesions (scar tissue) from past injuries that have not fully healed, and promotes relaxation.
Types of Cups used:Glass, Plastic or Silicone. Dr. Hartman was trained to use Plastic and Silicone cups, they are considered the best, easier to use, and will only be using them in cupping sessions.
How long are the cups on me for? Anywhere between 5 to 15mins per session, depending on the area is being worked on. A light massage is given before applying the cups. This helps to relax the muscles and to remove more toxins from the area.

What Are Some Benefits of Cupping that I can Expect:
Preparing for my session:
What can I expect after a session? You can expect to feel relaxed and most cases immediate relief after a session. However, some aggravation can happen in some cases the 1stday or two after treatment depending on how affected the areas is. Dr. Hartman will speak with you about this before your session is started.
Why do I have red circle marks? This is caused by the cups pulling on the skin to draw blood flow to the surface of the skin. A long used healing technique that creates an immune response for additional healing not achieved in the past.
Are these red circles bruises that hurt my tissues? They are similar to bruises and can be sensitive for the first 24hrs, but in most cases are not. In ancient times, the red circle marks were used as a diagnostic tool. (see picture)
How long will I have I red circles? This truly depends on the patient, how toxic they are, the deep healing that takes place, and how chronic the area is, but in most cases will resolve within 3 to 15 days.
Does it hurt? Cupping should NEVER be painful. There is always a way to reduce suction to make patients feel more comfortable and still allow for healing. If there’s any discomfort inform Dr. Hartman immediately!
Are there any side effects to cupping? Not usually. If you are communicating with your practitioner, there are usually no side effects, other than the red mark, which promotes healing in the areas and looked at as a good thing. In rare cases some people who are more sensitive may develop super small blisters. These are easily treated and in most cases disappear within the first 24hrs after treatment.
